To improve the flight performance of the Bf 109E, the last two true prototypes were built, the V16 and the V17. They have some structural improvements and more powerful weapons. These prototypes are the basis of the Bf 109 E-3 version. I have two titles Navy Veteran and Grandpa and I rock them both shirt. They were equipped with two MG 17 machine guns on the engine and an MG FF cannon on each wing. [2] The E-3 model also received additional armor, often with self-sealing fuel tanks and on some models equipped with improved DB601Aa engines with a capacity of 1,159 kW (864 kW). A total of 1,276 E-3 versions were built, 75 of which were E-3a export versions without classified devices. The E-3 was replaced by the E-4 version with many airplanes beginning to be upgraded to the standard of E-4 at the start of the British Battle. They differ in many small details, most notably the winged MG-FF / M cannon and improved pilot head armor. The MG FF / M cannon fired a newly modified bullet shell and was called Minengeschoß (mine shell) made of rolled steel (similar to the way bullets are made) instead of being cast as normal . This allows for a thin but stronger shell, larger inner space containing more explosives than usual. The new type of ammunition required improvement of the structure of MG FF cannon because of its distinctive jerking characteristics, which led to the new MG FF / M cannon (this special / M name is said to be the Motorkanone version of the MG cannon.
