During the 1960s and 1970s, Fortresses struggled to survive, because maintaining the operation of four-engine aircraft was expensive, while the ancient aircraft conservation movement was not started. The preservation of the rest of the Fortress began to flourish when the firefighting B-17s were launched in the late 1970s.
